Banding is the perfect method for packaging seafood. Think of fish cans that are currently being bundled with shrink film, even though this can be done more sustainably with banding. Or think of labelling skin packed lobster tails or salmon steaks. With a pre-printed band, you are sure that your products are neatly labelled and stand out on the supermarket shelf!
What banding seafood packaging solves
Banding seafood packaging holds a chilled tray or a skin pack closed without adhesive touching the film. Seafood packs come off the line cold and wet with condensation, and that is exactly the surface an adhesive label lifts from. A band wraps around the pack instead of sticking to it, so moisture stops being the deciding factor.
Weight, catch date, species, origin and the use-by print onto the band during banding. Seafood carries more mandatory information than most food categories, and printing it inline means the pack leaves the line with the correct data rather than with a label pulled from pre-printed stock.
For portioned fish and shellfish the band also replaces the sleeve. A two-fillet pack or a family portion is held with one band, the fish stays visible, and the branding sits on a flat printed surface rather than distorted over a curved tray.
Frozen lines gain the same advantage as chilled ones: no heat tunnel, so nothing warm goes near a product that has to stay at temperature from the line to the cabinet.
Chilled lines often run meat trays and ready meal packs on the same machine.
Sustainable packaging
A well designed band helps you increase sales. As the band only covers a section of the packaging, your fresh product or primary packaging remains clearly visible. A well designed band also increases the probability that the product is picked up from the supermarket shelf. Banding machines are available as Stand Alone models, as well as fully automated setups, including stacking functions or extra printers for variable information. Moreover, with the optional Multi-Width, you can run several band widths on one machine. This will make your packaging process even more flexible.

When banding fish, many efficiency benefits can be achieved. For example, with the optional printing technologies, you can easily print variable information while banding. Think of bar codes or country or language-based product information. With this extra flexibility, you require less banding or labelling material in stock. Moreover, in case of a minor change in information, you no longer need to throw out outdated material. This results in less waste, lower storage and transport costs and a smaller CO2 footprint.
