Ready meals carry more information than most packs: a product name, net weight, ingredients, nutrition, a barcode and often a price. Most lines still put all of that on a sticker, and the sticker is where the trouble starts. It has limited room, it depends on adhesive, and on a cold or greasy tray it does not always stay where it was put. Linerless ready meal packaging with a printed band takes the sticker, and its backing liner, out of the process.
A printed band wraps around the pack, is tensioned and sealed to itself. It needs no adhesive and leaves no backing liner behind. Because it runs around the whole pack, there is more room for branding than a sticker on the lid, and the printed area works across the full 360 degrees of the band. See how this works on ready meal banding lines.

For variable-weight meals the sequence is simple: the product is weighed, its weight and price are printed on the band, and the band is applied. Bandall SmartBand runs these steps in one continuous process, so the separate weigh-and-price label is no longer needed. When the system is connected to the weighing and ERP software, each pack receives the data that belongs to it.

Fixed information such as the logo, the recipe name and the layout of the nutrition panel can be pre-printed. Variable information such as batch, use-by date, barcode or QR code is printed during production. When a recipe changes, there is no stock of full-cover sleeves or old labels to throw away. The band simply prints the new data.

Many ready meals are sold in sleeves that cover most of the container. A band covers only the part of the pack it needs, so less material is used and more of the meal stays visible. Band material is available in paper or film, and the process creates no liner waste.

Adhesive labels are weakest on cold, humid and greasy packs, because the label has to grip a surface that does not cooperate. A band holds without glue, so it does not depend on the surface staying dry or cold enough for adhesive to work. Test this on your own product in your own freezer or chiller conditions before you decide.
Be honest about the trade-off. If your design needs a full-surface printed sleeve that covers the whole tray, a narrow band will not look the same. If your artwork never changes and you need very large volumes of identical packaging, a pre-printed band or a printed label can cost less per pack, because no printing happens during application. Compare both on the same product before you choose.
Send the tray size and shape, the weight range of the meals, the information that must be printed, and whether the weight changes from pack to pack. We return a line drawing of your product and a digital proof for approval before anything is produced.
In many markets a printed band can carry the mandatory information. Your regulatory contact must confirm the layout for each market, the same as for any label. For more on this, see what band labels are.
Yes. In the weigh, price and band flow, the weight and price are printed on the band as each pack is applied.
A band holds without glue, which is why it suits cold, humid and greasy packs. We recommend a test on your own frozen product before you commit.
